As more and more people are diagnosed with celiac disease, there has become greater awareness of the difficulty for patients struggling financially with the ability to maintain a 100% gluten free diet. Lets be honest, gluten-free food does cost more and even though the price has come down over the last few years, there's still about a 200% difference in the cost of gluten-free vs gluten-containing specialty products.
The issue of finding affordable gluten-free food has quickly become an issue at food banks around the country where low income families have started searching for gluten-free products. Thankfully, there are generous gluten-free folks all over the USA who are helping these food banks bring in necessary gluten-free items to help families keep up with the gluten-free lifestyle.
One example stems from Pittzburgh, where members of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank network are working together to help solve the gluten-free problem. About two dozen of the 370 households they serve monthly require gluten-free foods. The Celiac Center at the Allegheny Center for Digestive Health in Pittsburgh has been instrumental in providing gluten-free foods for these families by educating volunteers about the need for gluten-free items and rallying the community together to donate gluten-free specific foods.
