It can be pretty difficult for folks with food allergies to eat out. Even though awareness is way up and many places offer gluten-free or allergy friendly menus there are often horror stories of chefs not knowing either what is in the food or that certain foods contain gluten or other allergens!
Some restaurants go the extra mile and ensure that ingredients that contain allergens such as gluten, nuts, and shellfish are prepared separately to prevent cross contamination. However there is always an amount of risk to eating out if you have truly severe allergies and you can't be too careful in your questions to your server or to management to prevent yourself or your family from getting sick.
